Waging Peace - Memorial Day 2019

The patriotism which is so prevalent and
is shown on Memorial Day and Veterans Day is at times poignant and sometimes  misdirected at the same time. On Memorial Day, there is a wonderful TV  program honoring  those brave men and women who were killed in our wars, particularly in the last 100 years.

The  various service branches participate in an evening to honor those who died in the various conflicts that have occurred in the last eighty to ninety years. The service branches are each honored individually, but the point of emphasis is to honor those brave people who died in each armed conflict.

Peace is never celebrated nor are  organizations honored whose record is sterling in keeping nations out of war, with young women and men staying alive and benefitting correspondingly. The crux of honoring our armed forces is to help young people and family members understand the
presumed necessity of signing into the service branches to fight in our next war.

I make these comments not to demean the talents of the armed service officers  and enlisted whose thoughts are not noticed in this new and pioneering era. It is increasingly obvious that our nation really is more conscious of the probability of eventual war than maintaining the peace. The industry of making war is big business, with numerous corporations into the profits that come with  waging war. War is good for the bottom line, and profits are the soiled morass that funds the corporations who are paid to make war possible.

Waging peace is not impossible, but it is not always the first action that comes to Americans' minds. If we are to wage peace, a fundamental shift in our national consciousness must be a first action and not the muddled  beliefs of a few citizens. Peace is not just the dream of people around the world. I believe that as a species we are on a bullet train to extinction, if we continue ignoring the damage we have already done.

Sadly, the very trait that makes humankind a relatively unique species, our self-awareness, is the most potentially dangerous to our existence. It has resulted in the most powerful weapons ever devised, and the unprecedented environmental damage we have caused. May there also come the time when the unconscious destruction of our species can stop the violence toward our own kind, and then work together to save this little planet we have so blithely exploited. Thousands of endangered life forms will vanish, and we as a species will be responsible. Peace begins inside each one of us.
